How to write adverts that pull like crazy?

General Rule: turn features into benefits!

A feature is something that the product does or has.
A benefit is what it will do for YOUR customer!

Headliner: Grab your readers attention, so that they will
keep on reading.. then grab their attention again. One
great way to do this, is pull them into what you are saying
by asking them a QUESTION, then answering it.

No statements! No superlatives!

Statements often can + will provoke the reader, especially when combined with
superlatives.

Instead of statement and superlatives - DO use QUESTIONS!

In other words:
do use so called "rhetorical questions" = questions asked only to to produce
an effect or to MAKE A STATEMENT RATHER THAN TO GET AN ANSWER
(sorry for this yelling here = capital letters, grin)
eg: Who cares? eg No one cares.
or another exemple is: so what?

"Know how to ask. There is nothing more difficult for some people. Nor for others, easier."

No "we are the best" or " we are the fastest growing..." and bla bla bla!

You know: the net if overloaded with hype, dont you? OK, let others sing the hype-song, there is NO need for YOU to do that.

NEVER use the words: I, myself, we, our, our firm, our company and so on.......

The Four Pillars of a Successful Ad

I would like to talk a little about writing persuasive ads. There are
volumes written on this subject. Like anything else there are always a few
principles that you must follow.

I would just like to look at the 'steel structure' of the Ad but of course
there are the windows, walls, roofing ... you get the point. If the steel
frame is missing the Ad building comes tumbling down!

I see the four corner beams of any good as as:

#1. You have to first identify your market. No use trying to persuade the
entire world. The wider your aim the less likely you would strike the
'bulls-eye'. Are you trying to reach mothers with young children, online
marketers, pet lovers ... then you have to write with these people in mind.

While writing with a group in mind you have to make your writing as personal
as possible. So do not address the group but each individual member of that
group. The person reading your ad should be saying "this guy knows me."

#2. After you have successfully identified your target audience you then
must identify their major problems. What is it that these people DESIRE or
what are their major FEARS.

I capitalized those two words because these are what you are going to appeal
to. Keep in mind that the first law of Ad writing is that you must
concentrate on the BENEFITS your product would bring your clients NOT the
features of your product. (This is a law that must not be broken!)

#3. In this step you are going to be presenting the solution to their
problems. You must therefore show how your product would solve their
problems. Would it make them more attractive, younger looking, more
successful, wealthier, safer, more informed ... tell them, tell them ,tell
them! Load your ads with benefits!
Your client has a problem and you have the solution.

#4. The final step is to get them to take action, not tomorrow but today,
NOW! Do they have to click on a link? tell them and make it EASY to do so.
Do they have to call a number -then say so and ... you guessed it .. make it
EASY!

I sold religious books from door-to-door during the summer to support my
college education. I don't think that there is any other type of selling
that is more challenging. I remember reading of a salesman who did brilliant
presentations of his books but never got a sale.

After much disappointing results the team leader went out with him - the
problem was then uncovered. Can you guess it? - he never asked his prospects
to buy his books. People loved his books but he never asked for the sale.

Be sure that you don't make the same mistake.

Writing Powerful Headlines for your Ads.

In a previous article we talked about writing to persuade. Today I would
like to look at one of, if not the most important part of your ad. This is
the HEADLINE.

Your headline is the first part of the ad that your readers will see. If it
is not attention getting and impressive then the rest of your ad does not
get read.

This becomes even more important if you are using optin mailing lists to do
your advertisement. Most likely your email ad is sent out with thousands of
other ads. Your headline must stand out if you expect your email to be even
opened. This is becoming more and more difficult as time goes by.

For starters your headline should build curiosity and state your STRONGEST
benefit.

Let us look at an example. Consider these 4 headlines for a bathroom
cleaner. Everyone knows that this is a favorite part of any housekeeper's
chores!

A. "Use this product to clean your bathroom."
B. "The best bathroom cleaner ever!"
C. "Amazing new breakthrough in bathroom cleaning"
D. "Cuts your bathroom cleaning time in half"

Now which of these headlines grabbed your attention? Probably C and D and
not A or B.

For headline A, there is simply no benefit stated.
For headline B, maybe it is a little better than A but it borders on hype.
Everyone would claim the same for his or her product so why should I believe
you?

For headline C, The words used are emotionally charged, get you excited and
want to find out more but that's all. No direct benefit is implied.

For headline D, the benefit is clearly stated and quantified -'in half'.
This is important. However the words are not as charged as in C. Probably we
can combine C and D to get an even better headline to read as:
"Amazing new breakthrough cuts your bathroom cleaning time in half"

One of the best sources of good headlines is your newspaper. The writers
know that this is what sells the papers and they spend much time on the
headline. One of the most famous headlines ever was found some years ago in
"The New York Post". It read: "Headless man found in topless bar".

Now I am sure that got your attention!

Look in your own email box and see what headlines catch your attention and
there you have another resource you can use.

The Bible - The Source of All Copywriting Secrets

I've been a student of the Bible for practically all my life. There is a lot
of reason why this book remains the number one best seller year after year.
I think that it is the source of ALL wisdom, yes, including successful
copywriting!

What do I mean by this? Simply put, every copywriting strategy can be found
FIRST in the Bible. This may appear to be a strong statement but I challenge
the reader to prove otherwise. As I did the research for my latest ebook "77
Ways to Skyrocket Your Website's Conversion", I kept saying to myself "but
that's in the Bible . that's in the Bible."

I would like to take a look at 5 adcopy principles and show you that they
are as old as the Scriptures. This article is not meant to 'convert' you so
read with an open mind ... ready? Let's go!

1. Stress benefits not features.

It's the Garden of Eden. The serpent approaches the woman Eve to get her to
take of the forbidden fruit. Does he rave about the color, taste and texture
of the fruit? No, he sells Eve on benefits. "Your eyes will be opened, you
will be like God ..." (Genesis 3:4). Now that's a benefit, not a feature at
all. And did Eve fall for it? She surely did.

That may seem like a 'negative' example - a plain deception. But look at
what the book of Revelation promises the "overcomer". Eternal life, health,
recognition, wealth and mansions without mortgages.

2. Use lots of testimonials.

If you have just a cursory knowledge of the Bible you know that the gospels
of Matthew, Mark Luke and John make up the first four books of the New
Testament. They all cover the same ground and share many common stories. So
why would we need four different people saying practically the same thing?

You see they all wanted to tell THEIR story about the Rabbi Jesus Christ. So
the writers (all satisfied customers) relate the life-changing encounter
they each had - the more testimonies the better.

The entire Bible relates stories of peoples encounter with the supernatural
and how it affected their lives. In fact, Jesus related to the disciples
after His miraculous resurrection that all the Old Testament was really
about Him.

3. "Create a damaging admission and address flaws openly"

That's the title to chapter 3 of the master copywriter Dan Kennedy's book
"The Ultimate Sales Letter". He goes on to explain that if you openly admit
the drawbacks of your offer then your credibility goes up instantly with the
customer. For example, your price may be higher than your competitors so you
may say: "If you are looking to save a few bucks then you can find many
other companies who will be willing to give you some 'quick fixes'. But we
provide a very thorough and expert service, hence the higher price"

You are admitting that you are expensive but showing why - the customer gets
a superior service.

In the gospels we see many potential disciples who wanted to follow Jesus
and he told them openly that it was a sacrificial walk. He told them in no
uncertain terms that it involved a "cross", leaving father and mother
behind, even possible death - but you will gain eternal life in the process.
Talk about a "damaging admission.

4. Place a limit on your offer to motivate procrastinators.

This is a very important element of the "call to action" section of any
sales letter. Humans are naturally procrastinators. We always put off what
should be done now for a 'later' that never arrives. That is why the
copywriter must show that supplies are limited or the special offer is for a
'limited time only'.

In many 'call to action' sections of the Bible we see the same warning to
procrastinators. "Today if you hear my voice do not harden your heart .."
(Hebrews 3:7). In the story of the great flood procrastinators were found
outside the ark. Jesus told the story of the covetous farmer who built
bigger barns to store his grains not knowing that death would come knocking
on his door that very night.

Jesus never sent one of his listeners to go away and think about it. Today
... now, was the only time that anyone had. His message was "ACT NOW!"

5. Research your potential customers to know their problems and needs.

Dan Kennedy refers to this as "getting into the customer." Getting into the
head and experiences of the customer -walk in his moccasins.

The whole Christmas story is about Jesus getting into the skin - literally -
of the customer. The writer of Hebrews says that Jesus is touched by our
feelings and infirmities. He became like one of us so that He may understand
"the customer" better. That is why he could speak to the needs of the human
heart with such authority because he knows what is in man.

I've just briefly looked at 5 copywriting principles but this applies across
the board. Whether you accept the Bible as just another book or as inspired
writings, there is no denying that the principles are there.

I would love to hear from the reader if he or she would like to challenge me
on finding a useful copywriting principle that's not in the Bible.

Attentiveness means being aware of what's going on in your environment. It

The fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, who was created by Arthur Conan
Doyle, had legendary powers of attention to detail. Sherlock would notice a
dropping of cigarette ash on the carpet, or a faint smudge of billiard chalk
on a finger, or recognize that a person's accent didn't go with his Middle
Eastern garb and he'd have the clue he needed to solve the case.

Attentiveness means you're open to outside stimuli entering your field of
perception or, if the stimuli are more subtle, entering your intuition. It
means you're open to more information coming in through your eyes and ears,
through your sense of touch and through what's known as your kinesthetic
sense. That means how your muscles and the organs of your body react. Our
bodies can tell us loads about how other people are feeling if we're
attentive enough. Earlier we discussed the trait of empathy, putting
yourself in the other person's shoes. The ability to be attentive to others
allows you the access to the other person's feelings, and sometimes those
feelings are mirrored in your own body - feelings such as fear, sadness and
discomfort.

There's an old parable about a very educated English gentleman visiting a
well-known Buddhist master to see what he could learn from the spiritual
teacher. The holy man poured a cup of tea for the Englishman and kept
pouring and pouring until there was tea all over the floor.

Finally, the Englishman could not sit silently any longer and asked: "Why
are you overfilling the cup?" The Buddhist master replied: "This cup is like
your head. It is so full that nothing else will go into it. You must empty
yourself first in order to learn anything new from me."

The trait we're discussing - attentiveness - works a lot like that. In order
to be attentive, we need to empty ourselves of other thoughts and set ways
of seeing things. When we use our senses to take in all we can about other
people, we can much more accurately adjust our behavior to the needs of
others. When we're attentive to situations, we can exercise that power of
vision we spoke of earlier to make positive changes for ourselves and
others.

One out ot five axioms by Paul Watzlawick:
"Sequence of Events Can Be Punctuated Differently."

This axiom is a real beauty as it explains otherwise unexplainable
communication deadlocks. I recall this process of understanding the
punctuation of events from Bateson's Steps to an Ecology of Mind where he
illustrated that the simple description of a lumberjack chopping down a tree
may be described two ways:

1) Man swings axe into tree, then chips fly away from the tree.
2) Chips fly away from tree, then Man swings his axe into the tree.

Both descriptions are equally valid, only the punctuation is different. The
problem arises when one uses the followed-by-therefore-caused-by fallacy.
Thus to say, "chips fly away from tree causing the man to swing his axe into
the tree" is clearly a fallacy, but based on one valid punctuation of the
sequence of events. Now let us move into less clear interactional sequences.

[page 56] Disagreement about how to punctuate the sequence of events is at
the root of countless relationship struggles:

private struggles, business struggles, even political struggles.

Suppose a couple have a marital problem to which he contributes passive withdrawal, while her 50 per cent is nagging criticism. In explaining their frustrations, the husband will state that withdrawal is his only defense against her nagging, while she will label this explanation a gross and willful distortion of what "really" happens in their marriage: namely, that she is critical of him
because of his passivity.

Stripped of all ephemeral and fortuitous elements, their fights consist in a
monotonous exchange of the messages
"I withdraw because you nag" and
"I nag because you withdraw."

Sequences can be punctuated differently and the nature of the relationship
will be determined by the chosen punctuation of each party. Read more at

A parable tells about a martial artist who kneels before a master sensei in
a ceremony to receive the hard-earned Black Belt. After years of relentless
training, the student has finally reached a pinnacle of achievement in the
discipline. "Before granting the belt, you must pass one more test," the
sensei solemnly tells the young man.
"I'm ready," responds the student, expecting perhaps one more round of
sparring.

"You must answer the essential question: What is the true meaning of the
Black Belt?"

"Why, the end of my journey," says the student. "A well-deserved reward for
my hard work." The master waits for more. Clearly, he is not satisfied.

The sensei finally speaks: "You are not ready for the Black Belt. Return in
one year."

As the student kneels before his master a year later, he is again asked the
question, "What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?"

"It is a symbol of distinction and the highest achievement in our art," the
young man responds. Again the master waits for more.

Still unsatisfied, he says once more: "You are not ready for the Black Belt.
Return in one year."

A year later the student kneels before his sensei and hears the question,
"What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?"

This time he answers, "The Black Belt represents not the end, but the
beginning, the start of a never-ending journey of discipline, work and the
pursuit of an ever higher standard."

"Yes," says the master. "You are now ready to receive the Black Belt and
begin your work."

You may not be hoping for a Black Belt,

In order to do better communication with your business partners in the future you as a professional marketer should know about the world-famous so called
"5 Axioms by Paul Watzlawick."

Axiom 1:
One cannot not communicate.
In other words: you are communicating ALWAYS, even if you do or say -
nothing. At least you ARE communicating via your body = body language.

This first axiom implies some other important sentences:
One cannot not manipulate.
One cannot not change.
One cannot not decide.
One cannot not behave.

Axiom 2:
Human beings communicate both digitally and analogically (verbal and
nonverbal).

Digital codes represent by naming
eg "I am angry " or "Here you are....... the last business figures" etc

Analogical codes represent by similarity and NON-verbal
eg  harsh, loud voice and a red face or a smile, a friendly laughter, a
NON-friendly laughter, a slow voice etc.

Axiom 3:
Communication has a content and a relationship aspect.
Content: WHAT is said
Relationship: HOW its said (metacommunication)

Axiom 4:
The nature of a relationship depends on how both parties punctuate the
communication sequence.

This is a VERY important axiom.

crazy, man!  Means: hey, man that is wowing, gr8 + wonderful and so on.....

crazy man !!! Means: YOU are crazy = a heavy offense.

Only one little COMMA (behind crazy) makes a difference
that makes a difference = a * relevant * difference! grin

Axiom 5:
All communication is either symmetrical or complementary.
Symmetrical = equal relationship
Complementary = UNequal relationship

There is also a sixth remark, which is crucial to understand some phenomena,
that the context (in which communication is performed) is fundamental.

Developing YOUR communication skills is a lifelong process.

Paul Watzlawick explains the strategies you can use to assess
your own communication abilities, improve the effectiveness

First be warned: this paragraph is a little bit long!

The reason being is:
Most people ignore the context completly!
And some / most people even know next to nothing about
the meaning of context or do not even know the word!
In other words:
the word "context" does NOT exist in their vocabulary.

They are living in complete context-forgetfulness.

Although this IS valid:

The context is enormously important!
The context (in which communication is performed) is "fundamental". so to
speak!

So be prepared to get excited :-)

Boorishly verbalized:
the context makes the music!

Precisely verbalized:
People make their decisions context-sensitively!
What does that mean?

OK, at first some definitions + examples........

words that come before + after a word, phrase, statement, etc.,
helping to show what its meaning is:
eg
"Can`t you guess the meaning of the word from the context?"
or
"Don`t quote my words out of context" (eg so as to mislead people about what
I mean)

Think of the word "organ."
In a medical context = heart, brain and so on.......
In a musical context = a musical instrument (church)

Think of the word "job"
OK, you know what a job is and you know some different meanings of this
word, of course, too.

But what about babytalk, childhood language?
Do you know the meaning of the word "job" in childhood language, especially
if you
are a NON- native English speaker, grin?
Possibly not ?!
in babytalk to do a big job = defecation
to do a little job = urination

Did you know THAT? Be honest, grin, grin

also contextual
eg
"Contextual clues can help one to find the meaning."

circumstances in which something happens or in which something is to be
considered:
eg
"In the context of the present economic crises it seems unwise to lower
taxes."
"You have to see these changes in context: they are part of a larger plan."

other examples:

A smear upon the paper may be understood, by virtue of the context gained
from what surrounds it, to stand for a limb, or a body, or a cuirass, or a
hat and feathers, or a flag, or a boot, or an angel.

Also the double-edged saying is true in one context but NOT in another:
it means something that is and something that is not.
(Aristotle)

And meaning exists ONLY with reference to a context, which is excluded by
any scheme which identifies knowledge with a combination of
sense-impressions.

As matter of fact, the more he confines himself to noticing and fixating the
forms of words, irrespective of connection with other things (such as the
meaning of the words, the context in which they are habitually used, the
derivation and classification of the verbal form, etc.) the less likely is
he to acquire an ability which can be used for anything except the mere
noting of verbal visual forms.

Again:

Boorishly verbalized:
the context makes the music!

What does that mean?

To explain furthermore:
most people think that it is strictly forbidden to kill a human being.
BUT: is that right? Or is that wrong?
Well, the answer is: it depends............

And you as a clever person :-) have guessed it:
it depends of the CONTEXT, of course.

Think of these scenarios.......

A bank robbery - the robber kills a person. Consequence = hard punishment
for murder.

A woman is attacked by a criminal. She is in trouble, in dangerous
dis-stress, she is in danger of life and thus she kills the criminal.
Consequence: because she was acting in self-defence there will be NO
punishment at all.

And what about war??? - No explication needed. You got the picture, right?

To summarize:
Inside ONE context, a behavior is meaningless or seemingly crazy,
inside ANOTHER context, the behavior makes imminently good sense.

OK, now back to business.
What about the meaning of context in a business-context (little pun, grin)?

Well, the beauty #1 of the context-concept is:
contexts are changeable, they can be changed-

If you do NOT like the (private + business) context you live in - you can change your (private + business) context and create a better one!

The beauty #2 of the context-concept is:
there are NO personal traits - even if you have perhaps learnt that there
ARE!
NO, there are not.
There is only behavior in different contextS.
Anyway this description will give YOU much more - freedom :-)

Example:
being aggressive is NOT a personal trait but behavior in a certain context.
Remember the example above: the woman + the criminal..........

Laziness (yours, your kids, grin grin)
is NOT a personal trait but behavior in a certain context.

If YOU or - lets say - your KIDS :-)
are interested in a thing or procedure to the utmost extent,
THEN you / they WILL work hard + very hard, wont you?

Knowing next to nothing about marketing + promoting on the net is NOT
stupidity but behavior in a certain context
in other words:

you CAN change your behavior + become quite a good expert in that!
and: you can change your behavior QUICKLY.

In order to do so: change at first your beliefs in yourself.
Go from: poor me, I am a rather bad marketing + promoting expert on the net
to the - better - belief:
I AM an excellent marketing + promoting expert on the net :-)))

So let me aks you:
whats YOUR theory about YOURSELF?

Do CREATE your own contexts that fit to YOUR needs:
- your mental context = your beliefs.
- your context of ACTION = follow your daily schedule, your daily plan.
- your context of business relationships (!) on the net + all over the
world, perhaps one of
your most important contexts of all, because you can not make it alone:
you need other peoples help!
- and so on, and so on...........

In other words again:
YOU are the creator of your contexts.
YOU are the creator of an "universe of your own", so to speak.
YOU are the creator of your skills + abilities.
YOU are the creator of wealth on the net.


YOU can make it on the net - IF IF IF.......
well, now the ifs come in...........

Of course the ifs come in!
"Anyone can do that" - how often have you read THAT claim on the net?
Each + every day, right?
But: this claim is complete nonsense and a real offence against your
intelligence!

Naturally, NOT anyone can do it.

IF
you have the willingness to learn quickly and
IF
you have the willingness to ACT quickly and
IF
you have / develop what perhaps counts most = = = > perseverance -
then you are on your way :-)

Are you willing to accept this responsibility?
